Roseway Manor
Imagine having an idyllic setting to call home as you edge into your senior years; a place in which you can live your life with as much normalcy as possible while having all the support you can wish for from friendly, helpful staff. Sounds like a pipe dream doesn’t it? Such a place exists in Sandy Point, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia and it is called Roseway Manor.
Founded in 1976, Roseway Manor is a non-profit nursing home that currently offers 66 beds to its clients who range in age from 64 to 102. It is owned and operated by the Municipality of the District of Shelburne and the Towns of Shelburne and Lockeport. One hundred staff members Coastal Life 23 attend to the needs of those who call the manor home with duties ranging from nursing to nutritional advisor and administrative personnel, all striving towards the similar goal of excellent care. It is a place where the residents come first in every sense and where kindness and calm radiate from the workers. The peaceful setting of Roseway is enhanced by several beautifully maintained gardens provided for the pleasure of the residents, including one with an enclosed perimeter for Alzheimer patients.
The facility offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities and events scheduled throughout each month to provide plenty of mental and physical activity, including exercise classes, gardening and bingo. Some of the activities are not your stereotypical senior home fare either: they also have Tai Chi, Wheelchair Zumba and trivia contests on a regular basis. Days are packed with an assortment of fun goings-on.
During the past year, with the support of the CBDC, memorial donations, fundraising and a generous donation from the Roseway Hospital Auxiliary, the nursing home was able to purchase a MFAB safety standard Mini Bus to replace their older style van. This new vehicle seats up to eight residents with additional space for clients who are confined to wheelchairs and it is used frequently for recreational activities located off property.
Roseway Manor also offers Leisure and Support Services which provide an Adult Day Program that benefits seniors and caregivers alike by offering a place that provides activities such as baking, crafts, music and games for seniors throughout the day. The program runs from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Meals and snacks are provided during the day and there are even hairdressing and transportation services offered. This provides a great mental break for clients as well as their caregivers.
Visiting Roseway Manor will give you a sense that this is a place that is different from your ordinary nursing home. Step into the building and you will be greeted with a fantastic floor to ceiling mural that extends the length of the hallway; if you peer across the corridor you will see a cozy living space where smiling residents and nurses are actively engaged with one another and enjoying their time in a homey atmosphere. The attitude of the facility shines through in one of their core beliefs: “Home is more than simply a place; it is also a feeling.”
