What began as a small, unlicensed childcare center in 1998, has blossomed into Special Additions Child Care Centre, a fully-licensed and inclusive childcare facility owned by Deanna Petten and serving the Coley’s Point area for more than 20 years.  

Special Additions Child Care Centre provides care for children ages 2-7 and helps prepare them for school, while creating a safe place to play and learn.  

“As a young teen, I spent a lot of time caring for children, Deanna says. “I worked at summer rec programs and provided care for families. I always had a love for children and spending quality time with them made me happy.”

For Deanna, owning and operating Special Additions has offered a unique opportunity. She not only fulfills her passion for childcare but also gets to raise her own children in the same loving and supportive environment. "I love spending time with the children, they are innocent and fun and need someone to love them," she says. “As an added bonus I was able to stay with my own children and raise them in a safe, kind, and loving environment.” 

Deanna’s passion for high-quality childcare has informed every step in the growth of her business, the development of young people in the community, and CBDC Trinity Conception has been there since the beginning.

“Being a small business owner allowed me the opportunity to set my own hours, be available for my family, and to provide an invaluable service to our community,” she says, adding that she’s passed the entrepreneurial spirit on to her own children.  

“As a young entrepreneur, I was part of a microbusiness lending service for youth. It helped us network and services were available for training purposes very similar to CBDC,” she says. “CBDC has been invaluable to my daughter who just recently opened her own business. These programs are such a benefit to our young people.” 

Special Additions Child Care Centre accessed several CBDC programs, including a Youth Loan and business training programs.
