The Flower Cottage - Donna Thornhill
Donna Thornhill quit her job at a fast food chain on February 1st of 2009 to pursue a dream of entrepreneurship. The single mother of 2 was ready for a change, and was determined to get one. Donna had previously worked at The Flower Cottage – a floral design studio – for 6 years as an employee, learning as much as she could, and leaving an obvious impression on her employers. It’s obvious because when they were getting ready to pass the business on, they approached Donna to take it over.
“I went for an interview and quit [my fast food job] the same day and went to work at the flower cottage the following day. I always had an interest in floral design; I did many wedding bouquets for family and friends.” Donna was able to transfer her technical design skills into her work and continues to impress.
She currently has 3 employees and has no plans on slowing down. Her shop in the middle of Marystown keeps her on her toes for now, but she hopes to one day expand. “My goal is build a banquet hall of my own someday and cater as many functions as I possibly can” she says.
Even though you might not think it, Donna explaineds that being her own boss allowed her to have more time with her family. When she first started, both of her kids were small, and being able to do things like take them to their doctor’s appointments when they were sick was a great advantage.
Business isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it she explains. “Now my kids are grown and 1 is off at college. With me being a single mom, this business is more important than ever. I have to support myself and my 2 kids on the shop sales” But she’s doing it! Because of her initiative, hard work, and determination Donna is able to support her family.
She also had some great things to say about the folks who helped her get started. “CBDC was awesome. The helped me from day one, first with a working capital loan and they gave me lots of great advice {I sound like that commercial that I hear so often on the radio} but to this day I am still a client with CBDC. My last loan from them was to purchase a work van and it has helped me in many ways. Truly grateful.”
Business Tip from The Flower Cottage:
