But First, Coffee: Rebel Coffeehouse
No matter whether you live on the great northern peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador, or are just visiting, coffee is likely one of the first things you think about in the morning - and the best place to find that sweet, sweet, speedy juice is at Rebel Coffeehouse.
Colleen and Michael Loder were always passionate about two things: tourism and the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. So, opening a gathering place with great views and an area to feature local products was a dream come true. The coffee was just the creamer on top!
After spending several years at a local kiosk serving cruise ships and tourists in the area with local handmade crafts and treats, as well as being deeply involved in the local craft fair community, Colleen and Michael were always brewing up something bigger. Rebel Coffeehouse started in 2019, providing specialty drinks and food, combined with a warm, relaxing atmosphere, a space to gather and share local handmade goods, and the most stunning views of St. Anthony from an outside deck.
“Socializing and relaxation for our customers are very important aspect of our business,” Colleen says. “We share many cups of coffee with our locals and tourists (who) just want to enjoy the scenery of our community.”
The passion for the local community and people is evident in every part of Rebel Coffeehouse, with Colleen beaming about the history and natural beauty of the area with every visitor. And while the business features many local artisans, crafters, and even hosts arts and crafts evenings where Colleen teaches workshops, it’s also a good place to find out what the community needs and how to get involved. You’ll often find fundraisers set up at the coffeehouse for local sports teams and community charities and groups. Each year there’s holiday celebrations for Halloween and Christmas to bring people together, and don’t forget Thursday Nacho Night.
“The atmosphere where people come to sit and relax is always so enjoyable,” Colleen says.
The Loders worked with CBDC Nortip to create Rebel Coffeehouse which allowed the duo to pursue their dream of building something incredible in the community.
