Everything You Need: Bayside Grocery and Convenience
In rural Newfoundland, a corner store is often also the cornerstone of the community, which is exactly why Corwin and Linda Thorne bought Bayside Grocery and Convenience in 2023.
“Being the only business within 40 km and serving multiple communities, this business provides a major role,” Linda says, explaining the grocery store is also a gas station, hardware store, liquor outlet, and postal outlet. “All in one stop shop.”
The couple purchased the existing business when the previous owners were ready to move on, and serving the community has been their passion ever since.
“I love my customers and the relationship we built. At the end of the day going home and knowing all the hard work was for yourself and your family,” Linda says. “I have always wanted to be my own boss and own my own business.”
What’s in Store
Linda explains that the business has spinoff effects too, aside from just providing the basics to the community. It’s where fishermen fuel up, the postal outlet is a connection point for a lot of seniors, and the free local grocery delivery option also serves those more vulnerable individuals in the community.
“Owning a small business is exciting and rewarding, but challenging at the same time. Being a small business owner is one of (my) proudest accomplishments, next to my family,” Linda says, crediting at least some of Bayside Grocery and Convenience’s success to CBDC Gateway.
“I wouldn’t be where I’m to, without the help of CBDC and the support of their staff,” she says.
Talking Shop
Corwin and Linda went to CBDC Gateway looking for programs to help fund the purchase of the business. They chose a General Business Loan, which can be used to fund the purchase of land, buildings, machinery, or other operations. This option also gives entrepreneurs up to 10 years to repay the loan, giving them a better chance to develop the business with less of a financial burden in those critical first years.
