When Mindy O’Donnell arrived on Prince Edward Island ten years ago with her young daughter and just three suitcases, she carried more hope than belongings. What she didn’t yet know was that she would soon become a trailblazer in one of the Island’s most traditional — and male-dominated — industries.
Mindy had always been drawn to the fishing world. The ocean, the work, the culture — it all called to her. With the support and encouragement of her partner, Jeff, she stepped into the industry determined to learn everything she could. And she did. From tuna to crab to lobster, Mindy immersed herself in every aspect of the work, proving her skill, her grit, and her place on the water.
In 2022, she reached a milestone that many spend a lifetime working toward: she became the captain of her own boat, the Muriel Sea 1, based out of Beach Point. As a woman leading her own operation in a field where female captains are still rare, Mindy’s success is more than personal — it’s a powerful example of what determination, courage, and community support can make possible.
CBDC Eastern PEI has been proud to stand beside Mindy from the very beginning of her journey. Through financing, guidance, and ongoing support, our team has worked with her to help turn her vision into reality. For Mindy, that support has meant more than business — it has meant belonging.
In her own words:
“CBDC East has been the biggest support for me in helping me achieve and maintain where I am today. They are so understanding and never question what I need — they are always there to help! The financial support that is always there for me and just the friendship overall makes me feel like family. They have never turned their back on me and always have a solution to any problem. Truly the most wonderful business and family.”
Today, Mindy is not only a successful captain — she is a role model. Her story is one of resilience, reinvention, and the strength it takes to build a new life from the ground up. She is proof that women belong in every corner of the fishing industry, including at the helm.
CBDC Eastern PEI is honoured to be part of her journey and excited to see where the Muriel Sea 1 takes her next.
