Throttle Up: Western Mechanical Services
Good timing and a desire to race into a successful future together combined to result in the opening of Western Mechanical Services; a new venture by Shawn and Sarah French.
Shawn and Sarah, the owners of Western Mechanical Services, started their business journey in 2022 when on a visit to their hometown of Doyles in the Codroy Valley. They noticed a for-sale building, recognized an opportunity, and decided to move back home and start their own automotive repair business.
“Before we opened there was only one other garage in the area and since we opened we have had so many people tell us how happy they were, and how great it is, that there is another garage so they don’t have to travel out of the community for vehicle repairs,” Shawn says. “We are here to help anyone … when they need it.”
Full Speed Ahead
With Shawn's knowledge and experience as a mechanic and Sarah's expertise in business administration, the couple make a formidable team. Western Mechanical Services offers everything from major engine repair to motor vehicle inspections, wheel and tire repair and replacement, computer and key programming, and warranty-approved maintenance. Shawn says the shop also orders parts, tires, and specialized products for ATVs, boats, etc. which aren’t available anywhere else in the region.
“We thought this would be a great opportunity to finally move back home and start up our own business in automotive repair,” Shawn says. “My favourite part is having accountability for all work that gets completed.”
Calling All Cars
One of the factors in the success of Western Mechanical Services was the support the couple received from CBDC Gateway. Shawn and Sarah chose to help finance the venture with a General Business Loan, Kick$art Loan, and the Self Employment Assistance (SEA) Program, which allows new business owners to continue to make an income while getting started.
“They have provided support financially to facilitate required upgrades to achieve our goals,” Shawn says. “As well as helpful advice to navigate small business ownership.”
