While Central Newfoundland’s Exploits River is best known for its peaceful hiking trails, serene natural vistas and world-class salmon fishing, the island’s longest river now boasts a little more excitement and adrenaline thanks to CBDC Central client Chad Porter.
Since the summer of 2022, Exploits Extreme Ziplines in Grand Falls-Windsor has been providing residents and tourists alike with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to soak in the sights and sounds of the region while swooping 70 feet in the air across 1.5 miles of ziplines at speeds reaching 60 kilometres per hour.
“Exploits Extreme Ziplines is a zipline and adventure tourism company that provides thrilling adventure for all seasons,” owner Porter said.
“We offer six different ziplines ranging from 650 feet to 1200 feet over the rapids of the beautiful Exploits River. We also partner with other tourism and adventure operators to create packages that will give the customer the ultimate adrenaline-inducing experience.”
‘That’s where the idea sat for two years’
While Exploits Extreme Ziplines is now firmly established as a must-visit destination for adrenaline-seekers in Central Newfoundland, Porter admits that there were plenty of challenges that nearly derailed the business long before he opened the doors in August of 2022.
“The idea popped into my head 11 years ago,” Porter explained.
“I met with the town and got their support. That’s where the idea sat for two years. It’s a good thing I was ready, as it took seven years to obtain the Environmental Assessment and permit.”
Having finally jumped through all the required hoops, Porter says the most rewarding part of opening his business is his ability to elevate the tourism offerings in his hometown, and to be able to spend more time at home with his family.
“Having worked away for too many years, I looked for higher inspiration to find some way to stay at home,” he said.
“Now that it is operating, I am hoping that I can stay home, which was why it all started. I also am grateful to be able to contribute to the community and partner with other businesses to hopefully help make Grand Falls-Windsor a top destination.”
‘They have been helpful in many ways’
Porter admits he endured plenty of financial, mental and physical challenges in the 11 years it took to gain the appropriate approvals to finally open his business, and says the expertise provided by the team at CBDC Central was instrumental in helping him reach the finish line.
“The CBDC wants to see you succeed,” Porter said.
“They have been helpful in many ways – sharing and brainstorming ideas, keeping me up to date on any programs that are available to me whether they are financial or training opportunities. They have always been straightforward with me and have helped me work through some obstacles.”
To get the ball rolling, Porter took advantage of several CBDC programs, including business training and the Consultant Advisory Services Program, and now has his sights set on continuing to grow his business and help others in the region to grow along with him.
“It is my hope that the business will generate employment and boost the tourism and economy in our region, Porter said.
“It will also give locals another exciting thing to do in the town and give businesses a great team-building exercise. I also hope to partner with other businesses to help support each other’s success.”
