From Sunshine State to Sunset Suppers:

How Jonathan and Elana Joseph Fulfilled Their Dream

at The Argyler Lodge and Restaurant

On the edge of the water in Glenwood, Nova Scotia, The Argyler Lodge and Restaurant has become the kind of place people remember: a lodge with sunset views, a dining room shaped by local ingredients, and a team that knows hospitality lives in the details.

For co-owner Jonathan Joseph, the journey began more than 2,000 kilometres from Nova Scotia. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, he grew up in a family that loved the outdoors. “We grew up in the city, but we’re very much an outdoorsy family,” he says. “We fished a lot. We camped a lot. We spent a lot of time on the water.”

Nova Scotia first entered the family story through Jonathan’s sister, who visited on her honeymoon after crossing on the nearby Nova Scotia – USA ferry. She came home taken with the place. For Jonathan’s father, a longtime school principal approaching retirement, that spark fit neatly with a dream he had carried for years: owning a bed and breakfast.

Jonathan, Elana, and the family searched widely, from Maine to Yarmouth, Cape Breton, and even Vancouver Island. They wanted somewhere beautiful, practical, and on the water. What they found, almost by accident, was The Argyler.

At the end of a long property-hunting trip in 2006, the family was tired and ready to head back to Halifax. But their realtor urged them to visit a vacant lodge that had been closed for several years. Unlike many older properties they had considered, it already had a commercial kitchen, a large dining room, guest rooms, banquet space, and waterfront.

Then came the moment that made Jonathan and Elana’s decision feel simple.

“We watched the sunset over the islands as we had a couple drinks on the stairs, and we kind of knew this was the place,” Jonathan recalls. “It checked all the boxes.”

The family closed on the property in early 2007. By March, they had driven up from Florida. By June, they were open for business. The first season came quickly, and not without its early lessons. One of their first experiences with the property happened while they were still in Florida: the furnace went out, causing a freeze and forcing urgent repairs. Once on site, Jonathan spent much of the early years rehabilitating the landscaping, refreshing the property, and shaping it into the business it is today.

Shaping a Destination, One Guest at a Time

Although the original vision leaned toward fine dining, The Argyler evolved by listening to the market. “Elana and I originally came here thinking fine dining,” Jonathan says. “We tried that for a few years, then we went in a slightly different direction.”

Today, he describes the restaurant as chef-inspired casual: approachable, but thoughtful; relaxed, but quality-driven. “We’re not fancy. We’re not fine dining,” he says. “But it’s a nicer place, quality ingredients, locally sourced items.”

That balance has helped The Argyler serve several audiences at once. The restaurant, weddings, and events draw many locals, while the rooms attract travellers from across Canada, Europe, Asia, and the northeastern United States, including many guests coming on and off the ferry. The lodge features six guest rooms in the main building, cottages on the property, a dining room that holds close to 100 people, and a downstairs banquet room that holds about 125.

For Jonathan, hosting special occasions is one of the most meaningful parts of the work. “Probably meeting new people from all across the world,” he says, when asked what he enjoys most. “I also enjoy sharing special occasions with other people, being able to provide the atmosphere and the environment for people to celebrate special events, milestones, weddings, anniversaries, baby showers.”

Jonathan and Elana share responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the business, and he is quick to emphasize how central she is to the guest experience. “She’s the glue,” he says. “She holds everything together. She’s the guest experience aficionado.”

While Jonathan often starts the day, Elana is deeply involved in daily operations and personally reaches out to guests before they arrive. “She asks them if they’re coming in on the ferry, if they need anything in their room upon check-in, lets them know our dining hours, and asks if they’d like a reservation,” he says. “She’s probably our most important part.”

The team also includes Christina Wright – ‘Chef Tina’ – who now oversees much of the culinary side. That has allowed Jonathan, after years of long days in the kitchen, to focus more on being an innkeeper. One experience he still leads personally is the Friday night seaside lobster boil in the summer. He fetches a pot of seawater, sources lobsters from the wharf, and boils corn, potatoes, lobster, and mussels to serve by the ocean.

“It’s a hands-on interactive experience,” he says. “I kind of give the guests a little bit of fishery information.”

Weathering Challenges with Community Support

Like most businesses, the Argyler’s story also includes difficult chapters. The first six or seven years were financially challenging, and after the financial crisis, their original lender, a Miami-based bank, stopped doing business in Canada. Finding another lender proved difficult.

That’s when CBDC Yarmouth became an instrumental part of the story. “The CBDC kind of rescued us,” Jonathan recalls. “I reached out to them and they were willing to lend us the money and to refinance.”

His main contact has been Kristina Nuja, his account manager, whom he describes as steady and supportive. “She’s been wonderful,” he says. “She’s been great to work with. Makes things easy for us. It’s been really a great partnership.”

While CBDC Yarmouth’s support helped provide stability at a crucial time, so too did the loyalty of the local community. When COVID-19 arrived, tourism stalled, but The Argyler already had another revenue stream in prepared meals. When Jonathan and Elana came out of self-quarantine early in the pandemic, they offered takeout at a time when few restaurants in the area were operating.

“We were probably the only restaurant doing takeout in the area,” Jonathan says. “We were to capacity for the first month or so. We didn’t have any tourists, but the local support was extremely strong.”

Building On 20 Years of Hospitality

Nearly two decades later, The Argyler is more than a place for overnight guests. It is a local gathering place, a wedding venue, a caterer for major community events, and part of the broader tourism network in southwestern Nova Scotia. The business has earned local recognition, including chamber of commerce awards and early technology awards for being ahead of the curve with direct booking and online payment tools. But when Jonathan talks about pride, he points to being trusted with meaningful events.

It matters, he says, “to know that people look to us to cater these large momentous events.”

As The Argyler approaches its 20th year, Jonathan and Elana are still thinking about what comes next, including adding more accommodations. Overnight guests stay, dine, enjoy the property, and often explore the region around them, benefitting the entire region.

From a family dream in Florida to a waterfront lodge in Glenwood, The Argyler has grown through adaptation, resilience, and attention to detail. It has weathered financial pressure, ferry uncertainty, and a pandemic. And through it all, Jonathan and Elana have kept building a place where people arrive from near and far for a meal, a night, or a milestone, and leave with a memory tied to the water.

Just as Jonathan and Elana had imagined all along.
