Twin Shores Camping Area

Darren Cousins has never followed a conventional path to entrepreneurship. His journey began at just 10 years old, selling vegetables from his garden. By 14, he had already applied for his first loan—a bold move that set the tone for decades to come. Since then, Darren has built and operated more than ten businesses, from landscaping and construction to a resort in Miramichi. Yet his most ambitious achievement is Twin Shores Camping Area, now the largest single-site tourist accommodation on Prince Edward Island.

Darren’s connection to Twin Shores began long before he owned it. He rented trailers to campers there and developed a strong relationship with the original owners and their son, Brian, who would later become his business partner. Darren deeply respected the campground and recognized its untapped potential. When he learned the owners were considering selling, he worried that new ownership might alter the campground’s unique culture.

One summer evening, while sitting around a campfire, Darren shared his concerns with an acquaintance who worked in finance. In a casual but pivotal moment, that acquaintance offered to help finance the purchase if the opportunity ever arose. In 2010, that opportunity came—and Darren didn’t hesitate.

Together, Darren and Brian purchased Twin Shores, securing the necessary financing with the help of that connection. What began as a simple conversation around a campfire evolved into a multi-million-dollar acquisition—highlighting the power of relationships, timing, and persistence.

“Not taking no for an answer and figuring stuff out is what I’m good at,” Darren says.

True to its name—coined by its original owners in 1969—Twin Shores stretches from one shoreline to another. Under Darren and Brian’s leadership, it has been transformed into a thriving destination, welcoming over 220,000 guests each summer and managing approximately 55,000 site bookings annually.

But success at Twin Shores isn’t just about scale—it’s about experience. Darren and Brian continuously invest in infrastructure, upgrading power, water systems, landscaping, and equipment. Their attention to detail is meticulous. Even garbage collection is carefully designed to remain out of sight, ensuring guests never see trucks moving through public spaces. Every detail contributes to preserving the campground’s atmosphere.

The park is constantly evolving. Construction and renovations are ongoing, and the events calendar is packed with activities such as Christmas in July, Halloween in August, and weekly entertainment throughout the summer. While Darren admits he isn’t fond of crowds, he finds great satisfaction in seeing people enjoy themselves. He also draws inspiration from Disney, aiming to create immersive, memorable experiences for guests.

Like any entrepreneurial journey, Darren’s has faced challenges. While the COVID-19 pandemic had limited impact on operations, major storms—including hurricanes Fiona and Dorian—caused significant damage, destroying thousands of trees across the property. Cleanup efforts have been completed, but restoration and replanting continue to this day.

His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is straightforward: “Don’t be scared to take chances, but watch your dollars.”

CBDC Central PEI played an important role during a key growth phase. As Darren worked to install park model units to expand the campground, he required additional financing to maintain momentum. CBDC stepped in—not solely based on financial statements, but on trust in Darren’s character and vision. Former Executive Director Ron Holley supported the project, helping make continued growth possible.

“CBDC helped at a critical time. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back,” Darren recalls.

While Darren once envisioned a major expansion that included new facilities such as an office and meeting spaces, his focus has since shifted. Infrastructure limitations and challenges in securing reliable contractors have slowed large-scale growth. Instead, he is concentrating on refining and enhancing what already exists—prioritizing quality, uniqueness, and guest experience over sheer expansion.

During the first decade of Darren and Brian’s ownership, Twin Shores grew rapidly. Today, growth has become more measured, but their commitment to continuous improvement remains strong. With multiple businesses supporting one another, Darren relies less on external financing but still values the support systems that helped him succeed.

Now, he is equally committed to giving back—supporting new entrepreneurs and sharing the rewarding, “feel-good” side of business ownership that has defined his own journey.
